The Bielefeld Conspiracy

Bielefeld, Germany has a population of 323,000 and it located in the most populated German state, Nordrhein-Westfallen.....and a large number of Germans believe the town does not actually exist. The leading questions to this cause are:
  1. Do you know anybody from Bielefeld?
  2. Have you ever been to Bielefeld?
  3. Do you know anybody who has ever been to Bielefeld?
When asked these three simple questions, the majority will always answer 'no' to all three, giving them doubt as to if the city does exist. Any claiming to have been there, or known someone who has, is considered either:
  1. Part of the Conspiracy (Called SIE... as in they or them)
  2. Being deceived

All I've seen of Bielefeld
Most people having claimed that they have been to Bielefeld have actually only been to the train station, as it is a major hub for connecting trains.  However the station is at the edge of the city and travelers may only see a few buildings surrounding them, which is not enough evidence to support the actual existence of a town.

The rumors (or what should be called a meme) first started May 16th, 1994 by a University student in Kiel. And after 18 years it is still going strong in the German community. In 1999, 5 years after the rumors started, the city of Bielefeld released an official press statement title Bielefeld gibt es doch! (Bielefeld does Exist).... unfortunately the city had a poor choice for the release date... April 1st.

Perhaps one day Mariko and I will search out for the fabled Bielefeld city itself, as the pictures on the towns website do look rather pretty..... if they are true. And who knows, one day we might both be inducted into the world of SIE.
